lernt Henri Cartier-Bresson kennen

fängt an, mit einer Leica auf der Straße zu fotografieren

1937

unterrichtet im Rahmen des Federal Art Project Kinder in East Harlem. Erstmals fotografiert sie nun Kinder beim Spielen.

1938

Walker Evans und James Agee sehen einige ihrer Fotografien. Sie hilft Evans seine Ausstellung "American Photographs" im Museum of Modern Art vorzubereiten.

1941

reist mit Agees Frau Alma nach Mexiko. Nach ihrer Rückkehr arbeitet sie als Cutterin bei dem surrealistischen Regisseur Luis Buñuel.

1944-45

assistant editor in der Film Division of the Office of War Information (OWI) in New York. Zuwendung zum Dokumentarfilm. Ihr 1. Film „In the Street" (1944, 15 min.), stellt auf gewisse Weise eine kinematographische Umsetzung ihrer fotografischen Arbeit dar. Gleichzeitig ist er bahnbrechend für eine neue Tendenz des amerikanischen Experimentalfilms.

1947

Ihr Film „The Quiet One", den sie in Zusammenarbeit mit James Agee und der Malerin Janice Loeb dreht, erzählt von den Schwierigkeiten eines schwarzen Kindes und wird 1948 als bester Dokumentarfilm für den Oscar nominiert. Levitts Filme gelten als Vorläufer des unabhängigen Low-Budget-Kinos.

1950er

kehrt zur Fotografie zurück und beginnt in Farbe zu arbeiten

1975

unterrichtet am Pratt Institute, Brooklyn

1980er

wendet sich erneut der Schwarzweißphotographie zu
